Faheem Solangi

Postdoctoral Associate

Faheem is from Pakistan, where he received his BS (Chemistry) in 2007 from the University of Sindh. He then moved to Malaysia to do his Masters in Chemistry from Universiti Sains Malaysia under the supervision of Associate Prof. Wong Keng Chong and Prof. Hasnah Osman. He then pursued his PhD (2017) from the University of Queensland, Australia under the supervision of Prof. Michael Monteiro. After his PhD, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the same research group. There he worked to develop complex polymer architectures using CuAAC ‘click’ chemistry. Faheem joined the Barnes group at Washington University in St. Louis in April 2017 as a Postdoctoral Associate, where he is excited to work on redox responsive polymers.

Jonathan is recognized by the journal
Polymer Chemistry as a 2020 Emerging Investigator!! Very honored to be part of such an amazing class of 2020 investigators in the field of polymer chemistry!

September 15th, 2019

Jonathan is named a Kavli Fellow and got the opportunity to travel to Jerusalem to take part in the Israel-Kavli Frontiers of Science Symposium hosted by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the Kavli Foundation, and the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities.  Such an amazing experience to visit the Middle East and hear about some of the cool science being done in both the U.S. and Israel!!

Barnes group members had some fun bowling together before the semester officially starts in 10 days!!  Top bowling honors go to graduate student Mark Palmquist (rolled a 137) and postdoctoral associate Dr. Faheem Solangi (rolled a 131)!

Rising 4th year graduate student  Abby Delawder has been selected to receive a PMSE Graduate Student Travel Award to attend the ACS National Meeting in San Diego.  Congrats Abby on this well-deserved recognition!!

The Barnes group is excited to welcome Abdul-Haq Alli to the lab this summer as part of the Young Scientist Program - Summer Focus.  Abdul joins us from Collegiate School of Medicine and Bioscience (CSMB), which is a high school located in St. Louis.  He is currently a Senior at CSMB, and he aspires to go to college to pursue a degree in science on a pre-med track.  Welcome Abdul!

Barnes group undergraduate researcher Anusree Natraj lands 2nd place at the St. Louis Section of the American Chemical Society's Undergraduate Research Symposium for her poster presentation titled 'Synthesis of Sequence-Defined Redox-Responsive Polyviologens."  Way to go Anusree!!

We're deeply honored to have had the opportunity to host 2016 Chemistry Nobel Laureate Sir Fraser Stoddart (Northwestern University) for the 8th Samuel Weissman Memorial Lectures!  As expected, Fraser delivered two fantastic talks on the two year anniversary of winning the Chem Nobel!!


September 5-9th, 2018

Jonathan attends his first Packard Fellows meeting in Coronado, CA at the famous Hotel del Coronado.  This meeting also coincided with the 30th anniversary reunion of the program and was attended by 250+ from previous generations of Packard Fellows and capped off by THE Alan Alda (yes, that one from M*A*S*H)!  It was great to interact with so many Fellows from diverse backgrounds and to have the opportunity to discuss our work on photoredox-responsive artificial molecular muscles!!

To celebrate two years of being at WashU and with the summer coming to a close, we all blew off some steam as a group by throwing axes, knives, and 6-point stars at giant wooden targets!  Quoting 2nd year graduate student Mark Nosiglia, "It's like darts, but WAY better!"  One thing's for certain, this is a fun and lethal bunch!!!

The group moves into our new digs in the newly renovated Bryan Hall!!  With greater space comes greater responsibilities ... Awesome job to all Barnes group members who survived the arduous 3-day intracampus move! 


May 5-6th, 2018

Jonathan co-chairs the Foresight Institute workshop at WashU with 2016 Chemistry Nobel Laureate, Fraser Stoddart.  Barnes group members also participated in the workshop and 2nd year grad students Nate Colley and Abby Delawder give the proposal pitch to the workshop for their respective teams.  Way to go guys!!

Jonathan has been selected by the Cancer Research Foundation to be one of five 2017 Young Investigator Award winners!!  We are very excited to capitalize on this opportunity to tackle major challenges in cancer treatment!

Jonathan attended the 2017 ACS National meeting in Washington, DC and got to hear about some great science in addition to snagging a photo with 2/3 of the 2016 Chemistry Nobel Laureates (Ben Feringa and Fraser Stoddart)!

Members of the Barnes group (Jonathan, Angel, and Abby) visited Hope College for their inaugural Schaap Chemistry Symposium.  It was another great opportunity to present our work and to interact with so many talented undergraduate and graduate researchers!  A special thanks to Prof. Jason Gilmore for doing such a great job organizing this event!!

The Barnes group had fun celebrating our One Year Anniversary at Tower Grove Park!  Lots of fun grilling out, playing games, and listening to 80's and 90's jams (DJ'd by Angel)!!

Jonathan visited the University of Nottingham in England to attend 'A Golden Age for Chemistry' conference, which celebrated 50 years of Stoddart chemistry.  It was a great privilege to see so many familiar faces and to meet many members of the extended Stoddart family from generations past!! Thank you David Amabalino for hosting!!!

The Barnes group was awarded a Collaborative Research Travel Grant (CRTG) by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund (BWF) for our combination drug delivery project!  The CRTG program provides funding for relatively unrestricted travel and research expenses related to answering important biomedical questions through collaboration with research groups at other academic institutions.  Thanks for the support BWF!!

Jonathan visited Truman State University as an invited speaker of the Chemistry Department (hosted by Tim Humphry).  Many thanks to Tim and all of the students who provided tours of the department and shared lunch with Dr. Barnes!


April 12 - 13th, 2017

Jonathan was invited by the Department of Psychology to be the keynote speaker at the 25th Annual Student Research Conference at Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO).  Many thanks to Prof.'s Scott Brandhorst and Laura Delgado, as well as the student committee, for hosting Jonathan and organizing such an amazing multi-disciplinary conference full of great student presenters!

While at SEMO, Jonathan also spoke at the local ACS Southern Illinois section meeting hosted by Prof.'s Mike Rodgers and Christina Ragain.  Many thanks to you both for a great visit!

Jonathan, Angel, and Mary visit Monsanto, where Jonathan gave a talk on the Barnes group's research efforts thus far.  It was a great visit, hosted by Jeff Hughes, and a nice opportunity to see the Monsanto campus and learn about the science behind one of the world's largest agrochemical companies!

Congratulations to Abby Delawder, a first-year graduate student in the Barnes group who was selected to receive a GAANN Fellowship sponsored by the Department of Education!  Only six of these multi-year fellowships were available for this year's class of graduate students in the Department of Chemistry at Washington University, so her selection is quite the achievement.  Congrats again Abby!!

Dr. Barnes makes his way to Stockholm, Sweden to partake in the Nobel Week festivities as an invited guest of one of this year's Chemistry Nobel Laureates, Sir J. Fraser Stoddart!!

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has selected Sir J. Fraser Stoddart (Prof. Barnes' PhD advisor), Jean-Pierre Sauvage, and Ben Feringa to receive the 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for the design and synthesis of molecular machines"!!!  These three amazing chemists deserve this recognition not only for their contributions to science, but also for their class and professionalism which they have exhibited over the past five decades.  Congratulations all around!!!
