We are studying the motility of the Arabidopsis FRA1 kinesin motor protein at single molecule resolution using TIRF microscopy.
The Arabidopsis FRA1 gene encodes a kinesin-like motor protein that is predicted to move along microtubule tracks. It is known that mutations in the FRA1 gene result in aberrant cellulose patterning without altering cortical microtubule organization. Therefore, this kinesin represents a potential link connecting cortical microtubule organization to oriented cellulose deposition. We are studying the motor domain of the FRA1 kinesin at the single molecule level to determine the features of its motor activity that are important for its function.
