The Wild Ass (Equus hemionus) of the Negev

The Asiatic Wild Ass has undergone severe reductions in its range due to hunting and habitat destruction and fragmentation.  The populations in the Negev Desert of Israel went extinct in the 1920's.  The Asiatic Wild Ass was reintroduced into the Negev during 1982-1993 from captive populations.  We are studying the reintroduced and founder captive populations genetically, behaviorally, and ecologically to better understand how to manage these populations for long term survival.
