The beginning of Pages

The idea that became pages.wustl.edu began about two years ago. At the time, we were in the process of making every department, center, and program in Arts & Sciences a custom website using Drupal. We had many faculty members who maintained their own personal websites using the public_html folder in their artsci accounts.

The Departmental Support group reported that faculty members were often frustrated by the complicated process for updating html websites. At the same time, we knew that our model for creating custom sites would not work if we began creating individual sites for faculty members. There were just too many potential sites and too few of us!

Jess began to develop a Drupal site using a module called Organic Groups that allowed members to create their own personalized pages. As time passed, the project matured into something we are very happy with. We began inviting faculty members to be part of a pilot in September, 2011. Pages is scheduled to go "to production" on December 29, 2011.
